Acton Finance Panel Backs Separate DPW Vote

Finance Committee · Meeting of September 15, 2026

Acton Finance Committee eyes a stand-alone December vote on its DPW building, separate from a spring override. Members reported the town's projected fiscal 2028 deficit has narrowed to roughly $2.7 million from $3.4 million in July, though the model still excludes about $18 million in Chapter 70 and $1 million in Chapter 90 state aid. Members warned that Question 5, on the November 3 ballot, could cap future growth in that aid; a UMass and Channel 5 poll found 59 percent support.

Member Jason cautioned against assuming the town "always magically" closes multimillion-dollar gaps, noting one past override passed by just 45 votes. The town manager also flagged a jump in projected health insurance costs, up to $800,000 to $900,000 annually, after an adviser raised the growth estimate from 7.5 percent to 10 percent. The committee approved four sets of minutes with one abstention.
