Schools Confirm Cyber Breach, Reset Passwords
Acton-Boxborough School Committee confirmed an active cybersecurity breach and flagged a state learning-time shortfall.
School Committee · Meeting of September 17, 2026
Acton-Boxborough School Committee confirmed an active cybersecurity breach and flagged a state learning-time shortfall. Superintendent Peter said the district detected unauthorized access to data systems on September 8 and has been working with a forensic cybersecurity firm and legal counsel since, resetting passwords and adding security layers; a related portal outage turned out to be an Apple software update, not new intrusion. A state Integrated Monitoring Review found the district's secondary schools roughly 18 hours short of the required 990-hour structured learning time, one of five partially implemented findings among 29 criteria, with a corrective action plan due by July 2027.
The committee voted unanimously to award District Treasurer Stephanie Krantz a $1,000 certification stipend and approved its consent agenda. Members Lisa and Dennis agreed to draft a resolution opposing the November ballot's Question 5, which Liz said would cap state aid "at a time where towns and schools depend on state aid as a good chunk of our income."
