Acton's Select Board and Finance Committee opened fiscal 2027 budget hearings as Police Chief James Cogan announced his retirement after 42 years with the department. Town Manager John Mangiarotti said the town will "announce the transition plan next month" and recruit a new chief this spring. Budget Director Ellie Anderson told the boards the town's OPEB contribution will total $440,000 for fiscal 2027, down from $560,000 the prior year, while combined workers' compensation and property liability insurance costs are projected to rise to $417,000.

Cogan reported 26,468 police calls in 2025 and zero fatal overdoses, but a jump in Section 12 mental health holds to 108 cases from 83 in 2024. Deputy Town Manager Tom Bejan said the town received $23 million in grants over six years, including $4.8 million in fiscal 2026 alone.
